We do not have to be trained archaeologists ... though many of us have been fascinated by all things archaeological since our childhood. We do need curiousity and dedication to knowledge and understanding. To learning and practicing the skills and techniques of so-called “primitive” cultures. And we will discover along the way that our ancestors were certainly not “primitive”. They were masters of their environment and their abilities. The most important thing we can do to accomplish this noble objective is to break rock. To practice and refine our ability to break rock by the use of percussion. To master the preparation of “pre-forms” and to produce effective isolated platforms ready for targeted “soft hammer” percussion strikes. |

Sounds like fun. Takes much practice. It
also requires a supply of decent knapping stone.
So we will learn about sources of lithic materials ...
where to find or where to acquire the various kinds
of stone which we want to use. To reach our objective,
we'll also master several specific methods of flint knapping.
Can you hit a baseball? Or a softball? What about hitting a
nail with a hammer and not your thumb? Percussion work for flint
knapping requires and will improve your eye/hand coordination.
To move forward with making a “Clovis” point from a prepared pre-form ultimately revolves around the preparation
of isolated platforms and soft hammer striking angles to remove the thinning flakes at the base. You know. Those
famous “flutes” which are so distinctive and challenging.
As a member of the PaleoPoints Discovery Club, you will have access to all of our learning materials, to any
assistance which I can offer, which we can offer each other, by email or telephone, for any questions you may have.
We’ll look closely at as many photographs of “Clovis” points as we can, of artifacts from across the continent, which
